King of rock 'n roll, Elvis Presley, is the highest-earning dead celebrity in a list compiled by business website Forbes, even though it has been twenty-seven years since his death.

His estate rakes in about $40m (£22m) per annum through record sales, fans visiting Graceland, and merchandise. With a new clothing range and Broadway show on the way this sum is expected to rise even higher.

In second place came Charles Schulz, creator of Peanuts.

A Forbes spokesman said: "The earning power of most deceased people, even famous ones, slows considerably or stops altogether when they die.

"But for a select few, the pay cheques keep coming and some draw even bigger pay-days than when they were alive."

The late Freddie Mercury enters the list for the first time with £5m as a result of the successful We Will Rock You musical.

Also in the list: Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Marley and James Dean.
