The businessman who was at the centre of Steven Gerrard's affray trial has blasted the outcome of the case.

Liverpool and England footballer Gerrard was found not guilty in court yesterday, despite admitting that he had punched Marcus McGee three times in a nightclub brawl.

Gerrard, 29, has always insisted that he acted in self-defence as he had mistakenly believed that McGee was going to attack him. The incident took place at the Lounge Inn in Southport on December 29.

The jury at Liverpool Crown Court spent just over 70 minutes considering the case before reaching their unanimous decision yesterday. Judge Henry Globe later told the soccer star: "The verdict is a credible verdict on the full facts of this case, and you walk away from this court with your reputation intact."

Speaking to The Mirror last night, McGee, 34, admitted that he was shocked and disappointed by the verdict.

He commented: "I can't believe this. What message does this give to any young lad who goes into a pub at the weekend?"

Gerrard vowed to "concentrate on football" as he left court following the conclusion of the case yesterday.
