The 'Battlefield' star took to the stage after host Brand had teased the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings, telling the audience that there was nothing bad about the practice.
Speaking to MTV News, the singer said: "He'll probably target me for saying that. It's okay, Russell. I can take it. I got my armour!"
Sparks went on to say that she was still baffled by the decision to recruit Brand to front the event for the second year in a row, saying: "Why? I'm just asking why? I just think it's going to be really funny, because I think I'm going to go, but it's going to be funny to see what he pulls out of his sleeve.
"Does he have any other jokes besides the sexual ones? Nothing mean about it. I'm just asking. It's an honest question."
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, which will feature performances from Muse, Taylor Swift and Paramore, will take place at various New York locations on September 13.
