The barrister who helped Steven Gerrard to escape an affray charge received a six-figure sum for his work on the case, it has been claimed.

According to the Liverpool Daily Post, London QC John Kelsey-Fry was paid around £250,000 for representing the footballer, who was found not guilty after facing trial last week.

The Liverpool and England player had admitted to punching his accuser, 34-year-old Marcus McGee, three times in a nightclub brawl. However, he insisted that the attack was self-defence as he was acting on the mistaken belief that McGee was going to hit him.

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court considered the case for just over 70 minutes before making the unanimous decision to accept Gerrard's version of events.

Kelsey-Fry has previously worked for a number of other high-profile figures including Sharon Stone, Sharon Osbourne and Mohamed Al Fayed.

McGee recently admitted that he was shocked and disappointed by the jury's verdict.

However, reflecting on the case, Gerrard's solicitor Richard Green insisted: "There is not a question of doubt that the jury reached the right decision. I'm delighted they took on board all of the evidence and took such a short time to find my client innocent."
