MTV Europe Awards in Rome tonight

The 11th annual MTV Europe Awards will be held tonight, hosted by Buffy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and hip-hop star Xzibit. Other stars such as Kylie Minogue and the Black Eyed Peas will also be there to present awards to the winners.

The awards ceremony will be punctuated by performances by artists such as the brilliant Franz Ferdinand, Eminem and the Beastie Boys. Franz Ferdinand are nominated for best new act, best UK and Ireland act and best alternative act.

Outkast are the most-nominated act in the year's awards, potentially able to win five awards including best group, best album (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below), best song (Hey Ya), and best video for the same song. The duo scooped four awards in August's US MTV Video Music Awards. Their competition for best group comes in the form of the Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, D12 and Maroon 5.

Next most-nominated is Usher, with nominations in four categories.

Up for best female are Alicia Keys, Anastasia, Beyonce, Avril Lavigne and Brintney Spears, the latter also being up for best pop and best song (Toxic).

Best male nominees are: Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, Usher and Jay-Z. Robbie also stands to win the award for best pop.

Other British artists standing to win something include Dido for best album (White Flag), The Darkness for best rock, and Muse and The Prodigy for best alternative act.

The awards will be broadcast from 20:00 GMT on MTV.
