The star had flown to Tokyo over the weekend to begin filming her new reality show The Price Of Beauty when she experienced the magnitude 6.4 quake at 5.07am local time.
"Thought I was hallucinating. I have never felt anything like this in my life. Laying in bed watching CNN," she wrote on her Twitter account.
Beyoncé and sister Solange were also in Japan when the earthquake struck, promoting the Samantha Thavasa & Disney Collection range of handbags.
Writing on her Twitter blog, Solange said: "How did I sleep through a serious earthquake again! My sister said she was scared out of her mind and calling my mum, and I was snoring.
"Oh my God! Tsunami watch? Praying for everyone affected by this."
It is understood that around 70 people were injured in the incident, which reportedly disrupted train services, motorways and caused a nuclear power station to shut down.
