Americans conquer MTV Europe

The MTV Europe Awards held in Rome yesterday were dominated by successful Americans.

Outkast left with three of the five awards for which they were nominated - best group and best song and video for Hey Ya!.

Britney Spears beat Beyonce, Avril Lavigne, Alicia Keys and Anastacia for the award for best female singer.

The award for best male was taken by Usher, finishing above Robbie Williams, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake. The R&B star also walked away with the award for best album, beating Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas and Dido.

Maroon 5 took best new act, depriving Keane, Franz Ferdinand and Jamelia.

Linkin Park won Best Rock Act, Black Eyed Peas got the award for best pop act, D12 Best Hip Hop and the award for best R&B went to Alicia Keys.

The only British success were Muse (Best Alternative Act)and Craig David, who won the award for best UK and Ireland act, an award which could only really be won by Brits. Franz Ferdinand, Jamelia, Robbie and Dido all failed to win the awards for which they were nominated.
