Cameron Douglas, 30, who was arrested at a Manhattan hotel, could get a life sentence if he is convicted of selling thousands of dollars' worth of drugs.
Michael, who is now married to Catherine Zeta Jones, and his former wife Diandra told People magazine: "The family is devastated and very disappointed in Cameron's recent behaviour. Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be."
The sometime actor was transferred to a jail this week from home detention after his girlfriend Kelly Scott allegedly tried to smuggle him heroin in a toothbrush.
He has been arrested for cocaine possession previously.
