DS Icon: Judith Chalmers

Published Friday, Aug 14 2009, 06:00 BST | By Alex Fletcher
Judith Chalmers's career in recent years has been restricted to bleating on about age discrimination at the BBC, telling saucy tales on Loose Women about not wearing any knickers shooting Wish You Were Here... ? and cringe-inducing cameos on Graham Norton chatshows. However, here at DS we prefer to remember her as the uber-tanned TV minx she was during her '70s and '80s heyday.

With a natural skin tone that was never any lighter than that of a luminous Oompa-Loompa, she was described by one TV critic as an "orange colossus". She is best remembered for Wish You Were Here... ?, where she was sent touring around the world by TV producers for 30 years, without ever appearing to come back to the UK once. In her pomp, she also worked on Come Dancing, Miss World and various radio shows such as Woman's Hour and Family Favourites. Despite spawning her rather less successful TV presenter son Mark-Durden Smith and outrageously being voted No.88 in a recent Worst Britons poll, we've still got plenty of time for the lovely Judith!
