The 19-year-old actress, who plays Claire Bennet in the NBC series, is reported to have told Company magazine that it was "very difficult" to have a successful romance in the public eye.
"People have no idea what they do to people’s relationships. They destroy them," she is quoted as saying.
"The paparazzi and the public. The public wants to read about your personal life, and the paparazzi give it to them by nosing into your personal life and saying things that are just not true and horrible."
Panettiere split from Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia in February and was recently linked to T4 presenter Steve Jones.
