The 16-year-old singer reportedly split from Gaston in June after the pair were linked with each other from October 2008.
In a new Twitter post, Gaston said: "People mistake stupidity for bravery way to easily (sic)."
A later post from Cyrus said: "Yeah. I love when people mistake bravery with writing a few stupid tweets trying to make it seem like they don't care. You're afraid to love."
Later she added: "Every step I take I am in hopes to get closer to you. Please don't leave and if you do can I follow? Against all odds I fell in love."
Cyrus has previously said that only one man - Jesus - truly understood the meaning of unconditional love.
