Melissa Lefton told Heat that Clarkson was especially hurt because the cover made her look like a hypocrite.
In the interview with the magazine, Clarkson said that she "never felt uncomfortable" with her changing weight and that it was only others who had turned it into an issue.
Lefton said: "Kelly is most upset about he airbrushing because it makes her look like a hypocrite to her fans.
"It makes her look like a sell-out, not to mention the fact that it's insulting."
Following the publication of the magazine, editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger described the cover shot as "the truest we have ever put out", saying that the publication only altered Clarkson's appearance "to make her look her personal best".
