John Cleese has revealed his anger at being ordered to pay his third wife around £12 million in their divorce settlement, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The 69-year-old star has agreed to pay psychotherapist Alyce Faye Eichelberger £8 million in cash and assets, including an apartment in New York, half a beach house in Santa Barbara and a £2 million home in London.

She will also receive £600,000 a year for the next seven years, making her richer than Cleese.

"What I find so unfair is that if we both died today, her children would get much more than mine. At least I will know in future if a I go out with a lady they will not be after me for my money," he is quoted as saying.

Cleese and Eichelberger, who lived in a council house with her two sons when she met the actor, had been married for 16 years.

Cleese's close friend Michael Winner said: "It is an extraordinary world which means John is left with much less than his former wife even though he is the star who did all the work.

"The settlement defies human belief. John is extremely cross about it and I don't blame him. The settlement comes after two years of harrowing legal argument."

Cleese, who is currently working on a one man show about the separation, added: "I got off lightly. Think what I'd have had to pay Alyce if she had contributed anything to the relationship."

The papers to finalise the divorce settlement were lodged at a California court last week.
