The theme that runs through most DS Icons is that they are fallen and forgotten stars. They tend to be one-trick ponies, who we loved and admired for making a little go a long way. This week's icon doesn't fit into that category. This week's icon is the irrepressible Cilla Black. The grand dame of light entertainment television and a '60s pop queen, Cilla really has seen and done it all.
From her halcyon music days when she scored chart hits with 'Alfie', 'Anyone Who Had A Heart' and 'It's For You', to her '80s TV pomp with LWT smashes Surprise, Surprise and Blind Date. She has fallen foul of the cull on older TV stars in recent years, but she still proves popular on the chatshow circuit and with saucy Royal Variety cameos. She's given us a "lorra, lorra laughs" down the years, she's the consummate professional and she could still wipe the floor with the Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby's of this world when it comes to fun, family TV.
