The Aliens director's next film effort Avatar utilises the three-dimensional technology for the entirety of the science fiction movie.
Cameron has teamed up with Panasonic to advertise its upcoming line of 3-D TVs, which are due to hit the market next year, according to The AP.
"I believe 3-D is how we will experience movies, gaming and computing in the near future. 3-D is not something you watch. It's a reality you feel you could step into," the filmmaker said.
The company plans to transport trailer vans around the US and Europe next month with large 3-D screens attached, while in Japan footage from Avatar will be used as promotional ads for the devices.
Content for the medium is currently limited and though there is no agreement to bring the format to standard sets, a deal to make it more mainstream is close to being finalised with the industry group that created the Blu-ray disc.
Sony and Samsung Electronics may also offer similar products, in which consumers would don special glasses to experience the special effect.
Cameron recently announced that a 3-D conversion of Titanic should be completed within 18 months' time.
Avatar will open in cinemas on December 18.
