The actress, who was awarded an Oscar for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in the 2002 movie adaptation of Chicago, is thought to have been asked personally by directing legend Stephen Sondheim to star in the show.
Production spokesman Heath Schwartz told Access Hollywood: "It is still a rumour at this point.
"No casting for the musical revival has been confirmed."
If cast, Zeta-Jones will perform the part of Desiree, with Angela Lansbury expected to play her mother. The role would mark Zeta-Jones's Broadway debut.
