Phil Jupitus and '80s pop singer Belinda Carlisle have joined the cast of West End musical Hairspray.

The Never Mind The Buzzcocks comedian will take over from Brian Conley as Edna Turnblad, while Carlisle will play Velma Von Tussle. Sharon D. Clark, who played Dr Lolo Griffin in Holby City, will take the role of DJ Motormouth Mable.

Hairspray is based on John Waters' cult 1988 film about geeky teen Tracy Turnblad. Jupitus and Carlisle will begin their run in the Jack O'Brien-directed production at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 26.

Jupitus made his West End debut at Trafalgar Studios in Lifecoach in 2008.
