The notorious bassist died from a heroin overdose aged 21 while on bail for the murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen in 1979.
Dyer is currently playing Vicious in a London stage production called Kurt & Sid, which tells the tale of an imaginary encounter between the punk icon and late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
According to Contactmusic, the actor said: "The fascinating thing about Sid Vicious is he was useless. He was an idea, an image. He couldn't play a guitar or sing. He was called Vicious but he wasn't - he was a really sensitive soul.
"The only footage of him is on stage smothered in blood with a guitar in his hand. The only interviews he ever gave was when he was off his head. I think he is a mystery."
As previously reported, Dyer recently admitted that he would like to transfer his role as Vicious from stage to screen.
