The couple, who met on the set of the ABC reality show, confirmed their separation on their individual Twitter accounts last month.
Speaking to People, he said: "The relationship just wasn't going to go further because we're in different places in our lives."
He went on to address internet rumours surrounding his sexuality, saying: "I've been called gay all my life because I'm a dancer. I know what I like and I love women."
Hough is currently preparing for the ninth season of Dancing With The Stars, which premieres on September 21.
