Jack White has reportedly donated $170,000 (£102,000) to help restore a Detroit baseball park he played in during his childhood.

The musician made the donation as part of the ongoing restoration of Clark Park in South-West Detroit, reports The Detroit News.

White's former coach Morris 'Mo' Blackwell Jr said that the 34-year-old singer had shown promise as a baseball player.

"He was good," he recalled. "Smooth left-handed swing."

Deb Sumner, a park volunteer, also revealed that White has kept in regular contact with locals since he became famous.

She explained that she remembered him visiting with his ex-girlfriend "Rene Wellzinger (Zellweger), or however you say it."
