Betty White is to be presented with a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actor's Guild.

The Golden Girls star will be honoured at a televised ceremony on January 23 next year, TV Guide reports.

The 87-year-old is being recognised for her longstanding work in radio, television and film, which began in 1949 on Al Jarvis's daily live variety show Hollywood on Television.

White later took over as presenter of the programme in 1952 before becoming a frequent guest on gameshows, such as Password. She married the show's host Allen Ludden in 1963.

The actress then joined the cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973 as Sue Ann Nivens, while she later appeared as Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. Both roles won her Emmy Awards in the supporting and lead comedy actress categories.

White was most recently featured in film The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.
