Joe was widely criticised earlier this year when he was accused of using his son Michael's death to boost publicity for his new label Ranch Records.
During an interview with CNN in which he was expected to speak about the late singer's funeral, the 79-year-old instead introduced his business partner Marshall Thompson and went on to discuss his new venture in length.
Appearing as a guest co-host on US TV show The View on Thursday, La Toya said: "I think a lot of people don't understand my father. He says things the way it is and like it is.
"What he was trying to say, although he didn't execute it properly, to the world was that, 'I have this record company, Michael has songs that are out, so to keep the estate going what I'm going to do is put all these songs on my record company so his music can be played to fans around the world'. But it didn't come out that way. That's what he meant."
