According to the BBC, O'Neal, the son of the late actress Farrah Fawcett, was told by a judge that he must enrol in a drugs treatment programme for at least a year.
The Los Angeles Superior Court judge suspended a six-year prison sentence for O'Neal, explaining that he must have residential care.
He will not have to go to prison if he completes the drugs treatment and three years' probation.
O'Neal was arrested in April for drugs possession, but later pleaded not guilty. He was allowed to leave prison in June to attend Fawcett's funeral.
