Oscar-winning filmmaker Roger Avary has been jailed for a year for causing a fatal car crash in Los Angeles, reports AP.

He pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in a 2008 crash that killed passenger Andreas Zedini in Ventura County.

The 44-year-old's Mercedes was alleged to be travelling at more than 100 mph when it crashed into a telephone pole. His wife, a passenger in the car at the time, survived her injuries but Zedini died later in hospital.

Avary, who won a 1995 Academy Award with Quentin Tarantino for co-writing Pulp Fiction, has also been handed five years' probation.

Avary's other work includes writing and directing 2002's The Rules Of Attraction and co-scripting Beowulf.
