Con O'Neil has been cast as Matt Lucas's replacement in the West End production of Simon Brent's Prick Up Your Ears.

Lucas left the role of Kenneth Halliwell in the play based on Joe Orton's life after the death of his ex-partner Kevin McGee.

A statement from the play's producers read: "Given the sad news that Matt Lucas has recently received, it is understandable that he could not return to play Halliwell at this time and our thoughts are with him.

"We are thrilled that Con O'Neill, an actor of such significance, is available to take on the role of Kenneth Halliwell at such short notice."

O'Neill, who starred as Joe Meek in both the stage and screen versions of Telstar, will take on the part from October 22, the BBC reports.

Before that date, the role of Halliwell in the play will be performed by understudy Michael Chadwick.
