Sheffield-born Cocker credited the establishment as being responsible for kicking off his career in music and art.
The former Pulp star's studies at the then-polytechnic school also led him to being offered a place at London's Central St Martin's college in 1988, Uncut reports.
"Sheffield Hallam started my career in two ways - firstly as a musician because John Peel 'discovered' us at Sheffield Polytechnic, and then as an artist," he explained.
"If Sheffield Polytechnic hadn't allowed me to study on an access course then I would never have got my place at St Martins."
Cocker recently announced that he has written three songs for upcoming Russell Brand movie Get Him To The Greek.
