X Factor winner Lewis was apparently slapped at a Waterstones store in London, where she was meeting fans and signing copies of her new book Dreams.
A spokesman for the star has now told The Sun: "It was a totally unprovoked attack. Leona had been patiently signing people's books for a while - this man had been waiting for five hours. Why anyone would hit her I don't know. It's unacceptable."
Meanwhile, onlooker Steve Caris, 33, commented: "This bloke looked like a nutcase. He was like a bumpkin, well over 6ft tall and with buck teeth. He really walloped Leona. She must have been in agony."
It is thought that Lewis has told police that she wishes to press charges against the man in question.
The 'Bleeding Love' singer was yesterday described as "understandably shaken" in the aftermath of the alleged incident.
