P. Diddy placed a studio audience on lockdown after losing his diamond ring during a TV appearance in New York.

The rapper joined his Dirty Money bandmates Dawn Richard and Kalenna for the BET network's 106 & Park chart show on Tuesday. However, during his entrance the star accidentally threw his $20,000 (£13,000) band into the crowd as he flung wads of cash up in the air.

Diddy continued filming the live show until cameras stopped rolling for a commercial break, when he promptly ordered the building be shut down, says the New York Post.

Members of the 106 & Park audience expressed their outrage at the treatment on their Twitter pages.

One fan wrote: "Ok Diddy lost his ring... and now there frisking all the kids like this is Rikers (New York prison)."

Another posted: "When it was over, diddy held us hostage lookin for his ring. don't like him no more (sic)!!!"

A spokeswoman for BET later confirmed that the incident took place, saying: "The audience went wild. As he was throwing the money out to the audience, his ring flew off."

Diddy has yet to comment on the reports.
