The Motherhood star, who plays an internet blogger and mother-of-two in her new film, has said that she related to the role because she understood the difficulty of finding yourself after becoming a parent.
Thurman told OK magazine: "Well, her circumstances are different, but her concerns are the same as mine. Trying to be true to yourself as an individual and as a woman and be a loving mother and grow and find yourself - that's the kind of thing we all deal with. I thought that was really universal."
The 39-year-old actress, who has two children from a previous marriage with actor Ethan Hawke, has insisted that motherhood has allowed her to grow as a person.
She added: "The most rewarding thing about motherhood is the incredible opportunity to love and expand your heart, and to learn, and to discover yourself in many different ways."
Motherhood is on limited release in US cinemas on October 23. As of yet, no UK release date has been announced.
