Best Scottish band announced

Last night Belle and Sebastian were voted the best band to have ever come out of Scotland.

The victors from a shortlist of 50 artists were announced at a ceremony held at Glasgow's Tuts Wah Wah Hut. There were performances by The Proclaimers (500 Miles), Idlewild (an acoustic cover of Simple Minds' Don't You Forget about Me) and Snow Patrol who covered a Belle and Sebastian song.

Stuart of Belle and Sebastian said: "I'm delighted. Very surprised. I don't think for a minute we're the greatest band Scotland have ever produced but I'm very, very happy. I think it says more about the fans than it says about us.

"I'm annoyed that I missed the actual ceremony. I feel like a bit of an idiot. I can't believe we actually won something and I wasn't there.

"We're part of a great music heritage, so many of my favourite bands are Scottish, it's an amazing list of talent."

The top ten Scottish bands:
1 Belle & Sebastian
2 Travis
3 Idlewild
4 Wet Wet Wet
5 Sensational Alex Harvey Band
6 Simple Minds
7 Teenage Fanclub
8 Bay City Rollers
9 Primal Scream
