Travolta jurors 'to begin deliberations'

WENN

Jurors are expected to begin their deliberations in the case of two Bahamians who allegedly attempted to blackmail John Travolta.

The Urban Cowboy star recently testified at the trial of paramedic Tarino Lightbourn and his attorney, former senator Pleasant Bridgewater.

The 55-year-old admitted that Lightbourn had threatened him and demanded $25m (£15.6m) for not releasing stories to the media, which would indicate him as being responsible for his son Jett's death from a fatal seizure in January.

Jurors were later shown a hidden camera tape of Bridgewater meeting with Travolta's lawyer Michael McDermott and her attempt to extort $20m (£13.7m) in a hotel room.

Closing arguments wrapped up in Nassau this morning, according to E!.

The defence asked the jury to "set my people free". Lawyers for the pair theorised that McDermott had come to the region to "corner" and "set up" the defendants, who have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"A threat is a threat," prosecutor Bernard Turner stated. "The threat was not successful because no money changed hands, but it was not for lack of trying. Nobody is being set up. They weren't being encouraged to do something they hadn't already done."

Travolta and wife Kelly Preston were not present during the proceedings.
