The actress told Metro that she still does not mind being best remembered for the role.
She said: "Maybe in 20 years it'll be weird. That movie gave so many people pleasure, I can only be happy about it. And to think I was actually unsure about taking the role.
"I'd just made a movie called Tomorrow and it was a disaster. My musical career was just about to take off and I didn't want to jeopardise it."
She added: "I was 29 and worried about looking 18 for the film. Then I didn't think I could do an American accent, so they wrote me in as an Aussie."
Newton-John also joked that she "wouldn't want to try" to fit into the leather trousers she wore for the film's final scenes.
