Earlier this year, local newspaper The Southern Daily Echo described Fred Edgar Dinenage as "indestructible". What a fitting description for a TV presenter and news anchor who has outlasted so many fads, Next Big Things and glamourous co-stars in his 45-year career. Whether it was his work on ITV's World of Sport, gameshows Pass The Buck and Gambit, or his ultra-cool stints on Meridian Tonight, Fred has never let us down.
Dinenage's most famous efforts came on the sadly defunct CITV series How 2. He lasted 31 years on the educational series, while his co-presenters such as Jack Hargreaves, Bunty James, Gail Porter and Gareth Jones were regularly switched around. A figure of authority among a large amount of dross (we're looking at you, Carol Vorderman), Dinenage was for many the witty, dashing, hands-on father figure that we'd always wanted.
