In Morgan's diary published in the Daily Mail, the journalist praised Gately for not forgetting his roots in light of his fame.
Morgan said: "Woke up to the tragic news about Boyzone star Stephen Gately's death.
"I saw him with Louis Walsh last week at the Pride Of Britain Awards and he was on cracking form. Stephen, as all the tributes have said, really was a genuinely nice, happy-go-lucky guy who made the most of his talent but never forgot his roots."
He added: "When someone dies so young, with most of their lives still ahead of them, there is nothing to be said that can make it any better.
"I'm just reminded, again, of the best advice I ever had, from the late Chelsea tycoon Matthew Harding shortly before he died in a helicopter crash on his way back from a game. 'Live every day as if it's your last because one day you'll be right'."
