A Church Of Scientology spokesperson has dismissed Paul Haggis's comments that the organisation is homophobic.

Earlier this week, the Crash director tendered his resignation to the establishment after a 35-year membership.

The filmmaker protested the Church's apparent opposition of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex unions in California. He also renounced the institution's official spokesman Tommy Davis for not taking action about the matter in an open letter.

Davis has now stated that the correspondence was meant to be private and that neither party knows how it leaked online, Contactmusic reports.

He further denied Haggis's claim that he broke his word in regards to addressing a San Diego, CA-based chapter of the organisation that reportedly backs the anti-gay measure.

Davis also said that the helmer had made demands on the Church Of Scientology to condemn the initiative, which could not be done due to its tax-exempt status as a religious institution.

Actor Brad Pitt and director Steven Spielberg have donated $100,000 (£54,000) to the anti-Proposition 8 campaign.
