The German supermodel also told Stylist that she did not enter the industry to become famous.
Schiffer said: "When I was first discovered I didn't want to become a model, I didn't even know what it was.
"I was just so shy and hated being the centre of attention. I always sat in the back row at school, scared that someone was going to look at me."
She added: "I've learnt to overcome my shyness. Modelling has been a great type of therapy for me. Working with so many different personalities, good and bad, has forced me to come out of my shell.
"When most models start out, they love and want the attention. For me it was very much the reverse."
