Thompson, whose Rwanda-born adopted son studied at the university, visited the campus earlier this week to give a talk.
The Sun claims that during the event, one pupil mentioned BNP leader Nick Griffin.
"He'd love Exeter," Thompson replied. "He would feel very comfortable here."
She added that her son had "a rough time" throughout his studies and urged students to be more tolerant.
The University of Exeter spokesman Stuart Franklin said: "Racism is a sad reality of British life. We would be naive to think it did not affect some of the 18,000 people who work and study on campuses."
