The actor, who stars in new movie 2012 about civilisation coming to an end, said that an apocalypse would make him want to run a giant debt because he wouldn't have to worry about the consequences.
The 43-year-old told Elle: "Maybe people will get less commercial, less interested in material things. Although if there was going to be an apocalypse we should just charge a lot of s**t on credit cards and not worry about the consequences. Which is sort of what we've done anyway."
Cusack also revealed that his film career has made him "cynical".
He added: "You can think that the world has so many problems that you can become pretty judgmental. And when you're in this business, there's certainly a type you become. I'm cynical about life, about people."
