Actor Sir Michael Caine has suggested that the government should reintroduce national service.
Caine, who is currently promoting his new film Harry Brown, argued that a compulsory six months in the army would help deal with violent crime in the UK.
"[It would create] a sense of belonging rather than a sense of violence," the 76-year-old told the BBC. "I'm just saying put them in the army for six months."
He added: "There should be a great plan to re-educate these youngsters. It's such a waste - they all feel society has let them down."
Harry Brown, which is helmed by Daniel Barber, tells the story of a vigilante who takes revenge on young thugs who kill his friend.
"It's unbelievable the amount of violence out there that doesn't get reported," said Barber. "What they have to deal with is something else. This film is the tip of the iceberg."
