The singer told London Lite that Barlow was working next door while he was rehearsing for his upcoming Public Image Ltd gigs.
Lydon said: "When we started, I thought, 'Are we in the worst pit end of the universe?'. And then, standing there, was Mr Whatsisname from Take That!
"He goes, 'I knoooow, it's terrible!'. He knows - you work better with oppressive elements, you strive harder."
Previously, Lydon told the Camden New Journal of Barlow: "He's a fine lad, nothing wrong with him. I saw him on the Jonathan Ross show.
"I get on well with Jonathan Ross, I think he's all right, and if he likes him he must be kosher."
