Ben Elton has apologised for several derogatory comments he made about the British Royal Family, insisting that his remarks were "taken entirely out of context".
The comedian attracted criticism after an appearance on Australian TV show Good News Week on Monday night, in which he called Queen Elizabeth II a "sad, old lady" and branded her husband Prince Philip a "mad, old bigot".
According to Contactmusic, Elton's statements sparked a torrent of complaints from viewers. The 50-year-old has now issued an apology.
A representative for the star said in a statement: "Ben Elton apologises for any offence which may have been caused.
"The quotes attributed to him have been taken entirely out of context."
