The rhinestone-encrusted item of clothing was among 70 lots belonging to the singer that went under the hammer in New York.
It was bought for nine times more than predicted by Hong Kong businessman Hoffman Ma on behalf of a hotel in China, where it will now be displayed.
A fedora hat fetched $22,000, while a jacket worn by the star on his 'Bad' tour attracted a final bid of $225,000.
Commenting on the success of the sale, the BBC reports auctioneer Darren Julien as saying: "It's a tribute to his life and career - he's truly an amazing artist."
