Matthew Newton has apologised to a hotel after the room that he was staying in was destroyed.

The Australian actor, who is dating Transformers star Rachael Taylor, stayed at the Vibe Hotel in Sydney after attending the GQ Man of the Year awards party.

After Newton checked out and the vandalised room was discovered by hotel staff, a police spokesperson told the Herald Sun: "Police can confirm a hotel room was damaged at Rushcutters Bay."

A representative for the Underbelly star said: "It was [Newton's] room. He is not certain who caused the damage. He has apologised to the hotel. He has provided a credit card to the hotel as security to cover all costs."

In 2006 Newton was charged with assaulting his then girlfriend, Neighbours actress Brooke Satchwell. He pleaded guilty and was placed on a 12-month good-behaviour bond.
