Ban Ki-moon presented the actor and director with the Correspondents Assocation's Global Citizen Of The Year award, and reportedly named Cage as a goodwill ambassador on drugs and crime.
Cage described his new role as "shining a spotlight on the need for global justice".
Two years ago, the Hollywood star donated $2 million (£1.1 million) to Amnesty International to help fund rehabilitation shelters, medical services and psychological services for former child soldiers.
He also led a campaign around his film Lord Of War to raise awareness about international arms control.
