Pete Doherty arrested on drugs charge

Pete Doherty has reportedly been arrested on a drugs charge in Gloucester, immediately after being spared jail following a drink-driving conviction.

The Babyshambles singer was let off with a £2,050 fine and an 18-month driving ban at Gloucester Crown Court, but was then arrested by officers under suspicion of possessing an unnamed "controlled drug".

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: "A 30-year-old Wiltshire man... was currently assisting police with their inquiries."

According to Sky News, Doherty earlier admitted to careless driving on June 11 after playing a gig to 300 fans in Guildhall.

Following a police pursuit, the star stopped his Mercedes and swapped seats with passenger Daisy Whitbread in a reported attempt to avoid punishment.

Prosecutor Sarah Regan said: "Mr Doherty was pulled from the door and arrested. It was noted that he was extremely unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and he smelt very strongly of alcohol, causing the officer to form the view he was drunk."

Doherty admitted to drink-driving in court, having given a reading of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath on the night.

The 20-year-old was disqualified from driving in 2007 and had not renewed his licence since. He later apparently told police that he had offered to drive after Whitbread complained of feeling ill.

One wrap of heroin worth £35 was found in the car and a "home-made crack pipe" was taken from the driver's seat. A further 15 wraps were later found in his Wiltshire home.

In addition to Doherty's £2,050 fine, the singer was told to pay £145 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
