The brass plaque was this week reported missing from the street where it was placed in tribute to the Beatles icon in 1988, eight years after he was fatally shot outside his New York apartment.
According to LAist, the asphalt slab where it was put in is now just an "empty outline of a star", which has since been covered up with a plastic bag and tape.
It is thought that the star may have been stolen, damaged or removed by authorities to accommodate for the addition of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr's own Walk of Fame dedication, due to be fitted in February next year.
While the legendary Liverpudlian quartet have their own group star, the 'Imagine' hitmaker was the first of the band to have his own solo tribute. Beatles guitarist George Harrison also received a posthumous honour in April.
