Bristol honours Joe Strummer

Published Tuesday, Feb 15 2005, 11:30 GMT | By Daniel Saney
Bristol has honoured the late Joe Strummer by naming a train after him.

The naming ceremony took place on Saturday at a train station in Bristol, and is the latest in a line of trains to be named after famous people, a tradition that has survived 200 years.

The Cotswold Rail company will operate the Strummer train, a diesel locomotive built in 1965.

Strummer (born John Graham Mellor) was the frontman of seminal group The Clash, which scored hits including White Riot, Safe European Home, London Calling and Rock The Casbah.

He most recently performed with Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros before suffering a fatal heart attack in December 2002 at his Somerset home.
