The 61-year-old had become addicted to painkillers to cope with years of performance injuries.
He made a statement to Rolling Stone magazine, saying: "I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain.
"I am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates."
The singer's daughter, actress Liv Tyler, added to the statement: "We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans."
Tyler also dismissed reports that he had taken a two-year break from music, saying: "I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumoured two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false.
"I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled."
Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford had previously expressed concerns about his bandmate's drug use.
