According to The AP, the Santa Maria Police Department feared that attention-seeking terrorists would think that Jackson was a "soft target" due to the media attention that the trial would attract. The station requested help from the FBI for this reason.
The FBI concluded that there were no threats, but they did note the presence of Jackson's Nation of Islam bodyguards that he used during the proceedings, as well as former members of the Black Panther party whose names were blocked out in the file.
The documents, dating from 1992 to 2005, were made public on Tuesday through a Freedom of Information Act request from various media outlets.
