The former police chief who broke into the apartment of Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker's surrogate has been given jail time.

According to The AP, Barry Carpenter was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after being convicted last month of receiving stolen property, evidence tampering and theft in office. He was acquitted of the burglary charge.

Carpenter resigned two weeks ago as chief in Martins Ferry, where the celebrity couple's surrogate lived. Prosecutors said that he broke into Michelle Ross's home in May, took items related to her pregnancy and the surrogacy, and conspired with police chief Chad Dojack of neighboring Bridgeport to sell the items to celebrity photographers.

Carpenter's attorney Dennis McNamara has vowed to appeal against the sentence.
